Values Clarification Journal
Identify and reflect on your core values to align your life with what matters most.
What is Values Clarification Journal?
Helps clarify what truly matters to you. Reflecting on core values can reduce stress and increase confidence in decision-making. It ensures your goals and actions align with your authentic priorities, leading to a more fulfilling, purpose-driven life.
The *Values Clarification Journal* is a practice where you explore your deepest values (e.g., family, creativity, honesty, achievement, compassion). You might start by listing your top values, then write about why each is important and how you are (or aren’t) living in line with them. This exercise can bring powerful insights – for example, realizing you value “helping others” but your job is mostly about sales might prompt a career rethink. Research shows that even brief writing about personal values can reduce stress and improve performance under pressure, because it grounds you in what truly matters. By journaling about values, you strengthen your identity and motivation: decisions become clearer when you know what you stand for.
How It Works
What are my top 3-5 core values (the principles or ideals most important to me)?
Helps with: Identifying your personal core values
Explore deeper
Think about moments when you felt most fulfilled or proud — what value was being honored? If you struggle to choose, list moments that angered you too; they often point to violated values.
Why is each of these values important? What experiences shaped their importance for me?
Helps with: Understanding the meaning behind each value
Explore deeper
Try to tie each value to a story — a memory that made it feel essential. This helps you internalize your values rather than treating them as abstract words.
In what ways am I living out these values currently? (Give examples for each.)
Helps with: Seeing how well your life aligns with your values
Explore deeper
Scan different parts of your life — relationships, work, habits. Where are you aligned? Where does something feel off or hollow?
Where am I not fully honoring a value, and what changes could I make to live closer to it?
Helps with: Spotting misalignments and brainstorming adjustments
Explore deeper
Approach gently — this isn’t about guilt but opportunity. If you lived 5% more aligned next week, what would that look like?
How would my life look if I devoted more energy to these values?
Helps with: Visualizing a more values-driven future and motivating action
Explore deeper
Paint a picture: what would your relationships, work, and inner world feel like if these values led the way? Let it motivate action.
