What is Morning Pages?

It’s a form of active meditation that can reduce stress and prime you for a focused day.
*Morning Pages* is a technique popularized by Julia Cameron’s *The Artist’s Way*. Every morning, first thing after you wake up, you write three longhand pages of whatever crosses your mind. There’s no structure, no prompt – you just dump out the stream of thoughts in your head onto paper. The idea is to clear mental clutter and bypass your inner critic. By doing so, people often experience increased creativity, clearer thinking, and reduced stress throughout the day. Morning Pages serve as a “brain dump” or mindfulness practice in writing form – you acknowledge anxieties, random thoughts, to-dos, etc., which stops them from bugging you subconsciously. Many also find unexpected ideas or solutions emerging once the conscious filter is off. While largely anecdotal, this practice has some scientific support: free writing like this can improve creativity and problem-solving by engaging the brain’s creative networks. It’s essentially a daily mental cleanse that leaves you with a calmer, more focused mind for the rest of the day.
